Objective

Systematic literature search on skin substitutes covering clinical, economic, and fraud/waste/abuse domains.

Search Strategy

  • Define MeSH terms: skin substitutes, biological dressings, tissue-engineered skin, wound healing, cost-effectiveness, Medicare fraud
  • PubMed search: clinical efficacy RCTs and systematic reviews (inception–current)
  • PubMed search: cost-effectiveness and health economics studies
  • PubMed search: fraud, waste, abuse, compliance, enforcement
  • Cochrane Library: existing systematic reviews on skin substitute efficacy
  • Apply PRISMA flow for screening/inclusion
  • Capture all included articles in Zotero with tags: module:skin-subs, source:pubmed, type:rct|review|meta-analysis|economic|policy
  • Extract study characteristics table: author, year, design, product(s), comparator, outcome, setting, N, effect size

Starting. Building PubMed search strategy across three domains:

  1. Clinical efficacy — RCTs and systematic reviews of skin substitute products
  2. Cost-effectiveness — health economics studies on skin subs vs standard wound care
  3. Fraud/waste/abuse — policy, compliance, enforcement literature

Will use NCBI E-utilities API (Entrez) to execute searches programmatically and capture results for Zotero import.

~75% complete. PubMed search done (7,817 articles), grey lit catalogue done (20 docs), evidence base built with collections + COI enrichment. Remaining: PRISMA screening, snowball citation chasing, quantitative meta-analysis, Cochrane search, additional court filings/LCDs.

~90% complete. Added: study characteristics table (7,817 rows, product/sample size extraction), forward snowball (2,415 new articles), entity tags (2,130 items), expanded grey lit (30 docs: +4 CMS rules, +3 LCDs, +2 court filings, +1 OIG). Evidence base in DuckDB (10,262 rows). Remaining: Cochrane, quantitative meta-analysis, GRADE assessment.
